From 2001 - 2019, 5,440 service members were killed in action. During the same time frame, approximately 115,000 veterans ended their own lives by suicide. In other words, a veteran was more than 21-times more likely to die of suicide than a soldier was to be killed in combat.

Recent data suggests the daily veteran suicide rate jumped to 44 deaths per day in 2022. Assuming each suicide brings four first responders to the scene, these horrible tragedies affect around 220 people each day, veterans and first responders included.
